The project entails cooperation of experts in system analysis and synthesis, hydrology, soil science, geography and  geographic information system, spatial & dynamic modeling, engineering, sociology and agronomy.

ARCS: ARC Seibersdorf Research, Seibersdorf - Austria
ARIJ: Applied Research Institute Jerusalem, Bethlehem - Palestine
ECO: EcoConsult Office, Amman - Jordan
UNEW: University of Newcastle upon Tyne, Water Resource Systems Research Laboratory, United Kingdom
AIES: Arava Institute for Environmental Studies, Israel

ARC Seibersdorf Research

ARC seiberdorf research GmbH (ARCS) is Austria's largest contract research organization for applied research and development. About 20% of the about 500 staff members work in the field of environment. ARCS has been the first contract research organization in Austria which obtained the ISO 9001 quality certification. ARCS maintains a close cooperation with Universities.

The ARCS Environmental Planning Unit has focused its activities on the synthesis and visualization of environmental data through linking advanced dynamic models with geographical information systems. In the last years research activities focused on modeling of spatial patterns of environmental impacts. Much of the environmental research is carried out by request of national and regional governments.
The Arcs Water Unit has many years of expertise in groundwater protection and integrated water management (e.g. water balances, renewal of ground water, ground water dynamics). the team has experts in hydrogeology, geophysics, hydrology, water management, chemistry, simulation, and monitoring techniques.

Applied Research Institute Jerusalem

The Applied Reasearch Institute Jerusalem (ARIJ) in one of the leading environmental research establishments in Palestine. Its expertise covers a wide range of fields such as water, agriculture, land use, environmental database and indicators, GIS, sampling and surveying, and science and technology transfer. ARIJ has thirty professionals on a full-time basis and is able to draw a large pool of Palestinian expertise at home and abroad. Since its establishment in 1990, ARIJ published numerous books, prepared large number of papers and participated in many international and local conferences. ARIJ has in the last few years played an important role for the providing information about natural resources for the Palestinian Authorities.

EcoConsult Office

EcoConsult Office is a partnership consultancy firm specialized in environmental management and studies at the project, institutional, and national perspective. ECO is one of the leading firms in Jordan that deliver quality services to governmental agencies and international donors. ECO comprises the skills and capabilities of a number of highly qualified and experienced specialists, such as environmentalists, economists, engineers, and system analyst among other specialists.

Through its team efforts ECO promotes an integrated approach for resource and project assessment from an environmental, economic, and strategic viewpoints. Moreover, ECO has been involved in studies on the economic aspects of water use in Jordan, and water policy planning. ECO has been involved in the institutional restructuring and implementation of financial accounting systems, as well as water tariff modeling, for a number of governmental institutions. Moreover, ECO has extensive experience with data collection and management of data systems. For this Project, ECO will work closely with University of Jordan.

University of Newcastle upon Tyne, Water Resource Systems Research Laboratory, United Kingdom

The Water Resource Systems Research Laboratory is Located in the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. The department was awarded the highest possible national research rating in 1996 reflecting international excellence across a board range of civil engineering disciplines, particularly water resources. UNEW has coordinated two EU projects (POPSICLE and GRACE) and been a partner in other EU projects such as MEDALUS and VAHMPIRE, all of which are concerned with aspects of environmental change impact modeling. UNEW has undertaken large technology transfer contracts concerned with water resource management in Chile and Palestine and has participated in the international GEWEX/GCIP project in the Mississippi basin. UNEW gathers some twenty high quality staff drawn from a range of disciplines including engineering, mathematics, environmental sciences, computing and ,most recently, politics.

Arava Institute for Environmental Studies, Israel

The Arava Institute for Environmental Studies (AIES) is a private, non-profit, research and teaching center. It serves as a center for conservation and environmental protection activities that foster a regional perspective, developing ties between Middle Eastern and international students and organizations. AIES has been running an accredited academic program since 1996, and more recently has established research centers in the area of environmental policy, sustainable agriculture and regional environmental concerns. AIES has experiences working on joint research with Palestinian and Jordanian partners and has consistently maintained Arab student body presence on its campus. AIES has also the experience necessary for the GIS data analysis and synthesis required for the project.

The AIES Center for Environmental Policy (AIES-CEP) persues applied research and prepares analyses to address Israeli's major environmental challenges. The primary research focus is improving environmental enforcement programs in Israel, often considered the weak link in Israel environmental policy. AIES-CEP works closely with Israeli government agencies. AIES-CEP is situated in the southern Arava Desert, south of the Dead Sea, which is a particular advantage to the proposed project. The AIES Center of Environmental Policy will serve as lead institution and contribute to all AIES tasks. Two other AIES institutes will contribute their expertise: The AIES Center for Sustainable Agriculture (AIES-CSA) will contribute to WP- 4.2. and the AIES Center for Biodiversity (AIES-CB) will contribute to WP-4.1. AIES-CB is currently engaged in a major inventory of the desert ecosystems, and is involved in an assessment of water needs of the natural systems.
